Anuran diversity in urban and rural zones of the Itacoatiara municipality, central Amazonia, Brazil Acta Amazonica
MENIN,Marcelo; FERREIRA,Rafaela Fernanda Batista; MELO,Izomar Barbosa; GORDO,Marcelo; HATTORI,Gustavo Yomar; SANT’ANNA,Bruno Sampaio.
ABSTRACT Few studies in the Amazon region have evaluated anuran diversity in urban forest fragments or in areas with differing degrees of anthropogenic impact. We determined the composition and abundance of the anurofauna in urban and rural sites within the municipality of Itacoatiara in central Amazonia, Brazil. Specimens were sampled from January 2012 to May 2013 in 10 urban sites and five rural sites. A total of 1,538 anurans (930 in rural sites and 608 in urban sites) were recorded, belonging to 29 species in five families. Species richness was higher in rural sites, with 10 exclusive species. All species found in urban sites were also found in rural sites, however, species abundance varied considerably between the habitats. Sampling- and...

Calliphoridae (Diptera) from wild, suburban, and urban sites at three Southeast Patagonian localities: Calliphoridae (Diptera) de ambientes no habitados, suburbanos y urbanos en tres localidades del sudeste patagónico Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Mariluis,Juan C.; Schnack,Juan A.; Mulieri,Pablo P.; Patitucci,Luciano D..
Species composition, relative abundance, sex ratio and habitat preference of blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) from Caleta Olivia, Puerto Deseado, and Puerto San Julián (Santa Cruz Province, Argentina) were studied during late spring and summer in 2004-2005. Results showed a higher prevalence of the exotic species, Calliphora vicina (Robineau-Desvoidy) and Phaenicia sericata (Meigen) at urban sites over the natives, Compsomyops fulvicrura (Robineau-Desvoidy) and Sarconesia chlorogaster (Wiedemann), which shows a strong preference for those sampling sites either not inhabited or less influenced by human activities. Sex ratio was female biased for all species, except for Sarconesia chlorogaster, which exhibited a male prevalence over females.

Changes in the taxonomic structure of periphytic algae on a free-floating macrophyte (Utricularia foliosa L.) in relation to macrophyte richness over seasons Acta Botanica
Santos,Thiago Rodrigues dos; Ferragut,Carla.
ABSTRACT Periphyton has a strong relationship with aquatic macrophytes, which are key components of spatial heterogeneity in the littoral zone. We evaluated the relationship between the community structure of periphytic algae on Utricularia foliosa and macrophyte richness and coverage and limnological variables in a shallow reservoir. Water sampling for physical, chemical and biological analyses was performed at sites with contrasting macrophyte coverage and richness in each of the four main seasons of the year. Periphytic algae were evaluated for density and species composition. High densities of diatoms and filamentous cyanobacteria in the periphyton were observed at sites with high macrophyte coverage and richness, while high abundances of flagellates...

Collembolan community in broad-leaved forests and in conifer stands of Cryptomeria japonica in Central Japan PAB
Hasegawa,Motohiro; Fukuyama,Kenji; Makino,Shun'ichi; Okochi,Isamu; Tanaka,Hiroshi; Okabe,Kimiko; Goto,Hideaki; Mizoguchi,Takeo; Sakata,Tadashi.
Collembolan communities in conifer plantations (Japanese cedar, Cryptomeria japonica) and secondary deciduous broad-leaved forests of varying ages were investigated to determine the extent to which forest conversion (broad-leaved to coniferous) affects the species richness and assemblage composition of Collembola in central Japan. Density and total species richness of Collembola not differed between the broad-leaved and cedar forests except immediately after clear-cutting. The amount of forest-floor organic matter was larger in cedar forests and positively correlated with the species richness of detritus feeders. Species richness of fungal feeders and sucking feeders positively correlated with the species richness of forest-floor plants. There was...

Depth-related diversity patterns of free-living nematode assemblages on two tropical rocky shores OceanDocs
Armenteros, Maickel; del Pino-Machado, Arturo; González-González, Susett; Ruiz-Abierno, Alexei; Pérez-García, José Andrés.
Depth-related spatial patterns of diversity have been described for free-living nematode assemblages at four depth horizons (intertidal, 1 m, 5 m and 10 m) at two subtidal rocky shores on the NW coast of Cuba: Bacunayagua and Miramar. The patterns were described based on species identity and biological traits. Species richness was similar across depth horizons ranging from 12 to 18 species; it was also similar between sites with 30 and 33 species for Bacunayagua and Miramar respectively. Diversity variation was higher between the intertidal and the subtidal horizons suggesting that microhabitat plays a key role. Depth was not an important driver of the diversity of nematodes on the studied rocky shores both in terms of species richness and diversity...

Determining long‐term changes in a skate assemblage with aggregated landings and limited species data ArchiMer
Marandel, Florianne; Lorance, Pascal; Trenkel, Verena.
Sustainable fisheries management requires assessment of exploited populations and communities. Traditional fisheries stock assessment methods need species‐specific input data, which for skates have only recently become available in Europe. To overcome this limitation, a Bayesian multispecies biomass production model was developed. In addition to aggregated landings, input data are short time series with species‐specific information (landings and biomass indices). Applying the approach to four main skate species and a group of two skate species, all managed together in the Bay of Biscay (Northeast Atlantic), long‐term changes in the skate assemblage composition were identified. Since the 1990s, Leucoraja naevus became increasingly dominant, while the...

Distribution of the assemblage of phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) along an environmental gradient Biota Neotropica
Antonini,Yasmine; Fernandes,G. Wilson; Barata,Ricardo Andrade.
Abstract The geographical distribution of leishmaniasis has undoubtedly expanded, and is now being reported to be in areas that were previously non-endemic. This study therefore aimed to investigate whether there is any variation in the structure and in the composition of phlebotomine communities along an environmental gradient - from a mesic to a xeric environment, across different climatic periods (rainy and dry seasons). Furthermore, we test whether there were differences in sex ratio of sand flies between wet and dry environments. A total of 535 specimens of sand flies belonging to 18 species were recorded. Richness, abundance, and composition of species were significatively higher in the xeric environment (semidecidual Forest) compared to the mesic...

Diversity of small land mammals in a subtropical Atlantic forest in the western region of the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Maestri,Renan; Galiano,Daniel; Kubiak,Bruno Busnello; Marinho,Jorge Reppold.
Small land mammals possess features that significantly influence the dynamics of ecosystems and participate in various levels of the food web. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest the richness of these animals is high, which makes them even more ecologically and numerically relevant in this environment. In this context, we investigated the species composition of small mammals in an unexplored area of southern Brazil, and compared the species composition of this area with other Atlantic Forest regions in order to understand how this community is related to others. The study area was located in an interior Atlantic forest formation, at a transition region between deciduous and Araucaria forests. Small mammals were captured at five collection points using pitfall...

Does fire determine distinct floristic composition of two Cerrado savanna communities on different substrates? Acta Botanica
Lenza,Eddie; Abadia,Ana Clara; Menegat,Hélio; Lúcio,Nadjarriny W.; Maracahipes-Santos,Leonardo; Mews,Henrique A.; Santos,Josias O. dos; Martins,Jhany.
ABSTRACT We surveyed two savanna sites, one on flat terrain with deep soil (DS), and the other on hilly terrain with rocky outcrops and shallow soil (RS), before and after an accidental fire. We found that the fire did not cause any significant changes in the species composition or diversity of either community, and did not result in floristic homogenization. However, we did record a reduction in the density of plants and in basal area in the DS savanna in comparison with the RS savanna, as well as a higher rate of basal sprouting, which indicates a trade-off between mortality and sprouting. We conclude that, whereas post-fire changes in vegetation structure were more pronounced in the DS savanna than in the RS, the difference in the underlying substrate...

Effect of Grazing Systems on Range Condition in Pabbi Hills Reserve Forest, Kharian, Punjab, Pakistan Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Sajjad Haider,Muhammad; Maclaurin,Angus; Ali Chaudhry,Amjad; Mushtaque,Muhammad; Ullah,Sami.
Grazing management of rangeland systems has not been well researched in Pakistan; grazing system the most sustainable is not known. In order to evaluate various grazing systems, a study was performed at Pabbi Hills Reserve Forest, Kharian, Punjab. Four simulated grazing treatments, viz. ungrazed control, continuous grazing, seasonal deferred grazing, and rotational deferred grazing, were tested in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Response variables included species composition, fresh herbage yield, dry herbage yield of grasses and forbs, basal cover, and ground cover. Of the three grazing systems, the six-month seasonal deferred grazing system resulted in a marked increase in basal cover, but had no changes in relative species...

Epiphytic microlichens as indicators of phytosociological differentiation between Caatinga and Brejos de Altitude Acta Botanica
Leite,Amanda Barreto Xavier; Menezes,Aline Anjos de; Souto,Leandro de Sousa; Aptroot,André; Lücking,Robert; Santos,Viviane Monique dos; Cáceres,Marcela Eugenia da Silva.
The present study tested the hypothesis that species richness and composition of epiphytic microlichens can be used to support the phytosociological differentiation between Caatinga and Brejos de Altitude, as exemplified by the Muralha Reserve (Caatinga) and the Parque Estadual Mata do Pau Ferro (Brejo de Altitude), in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. A total of 755 lichen samples were collected, comprising 18 families, 42 genera and 111 species of epiphytic, corticolous microlichens. Overall species richness was higher in the Caatinga, with 67 species, compared to the Brejo, with 46 species. Species richness per sample was significantly higher in the Caatinga compared to the Brejo. Taxonomic composition also differed significantly between the two areas, with...

From forests to cattail: how does the riparian zone influence stream fish? Neotropical Ichthyology
Casatti,Lilian; Teresa,Fabrício Barreto; Gonçalves-Souza,Thiago; Bessa,Eduardo; Manzotti,Angelo Rodrigo; Gonçalves,Cristina da Silva; Zeni,Jaquelini de Oliveira.
The aim of this study was to verify whether taxonomic and functional composition of stream fishes vary under three different preservation conditions of riparian zone: preserved (PRE), intermediate condition (INT), and degraded (DEG). Five stream stretches representing each condition were selected. Samples were taken from each stream in three occasions during the dry seasons from 2004 to 2007. Electro fishing (PRE and INT), sieves, dip nets, and hand seines (DEG) were used according to the characteristics of each sampled site. Overall, 46 species were registered. Differences in the taxonomic and functional species composition among groups were found, following the condition of riparian zones. The ichthyofauna recorded in the PRE was typical to pristine...

Galling arthropod diversity in adjacent swamp forests and restinga vegetation in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Mendonça Jr,Milton De S; Piccardi,Hosana M F; Jahnke,Simone M; Dalbem,Ricardo V.
Galling arthropods create plant structures inside which they find shelter. Factors acting on galler diversity are still being discussed, with this fauna considered more diverse in xeric than mesic environments (higrothermic stress hypothesis, HSH), and also in more plant diverse sites. Here we compare galler abundance (N), equitability (E), species richness (S) and composition between adjacent restinga (xeric) and swamp forests (mesic) in Parque Estadual de Itapeva (29°21' S, 49°45' W), Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Five trails, two in swamp forest and three in restingas, were sampled four times each (January/December 2005). After an effort of 60h/person, 621 galled plant individuals belonging to 104 gall morphotypes were recorded. This suggests a...

Patterns and breaking points in the distribution of benthic algae along the temperate Pacific coast of South America RChHN
MENESES,ISABEL; SANTELICES,BERNABE.
According to biogeographic studies made two decades ago, marine benthic algal species of the Pacific temperate coast of South America could be grouped into five components according to their geographic affinities. Each of these components was distributed differentially along the coastline between 4º and 56ºS and thus, their contribution to the overall flora varied depending on the latitude. Species composition changed at specific latitudes in such a way that three groups could be observed: from 4 to 6ºS, from 6 to 30ºS and from 30 to 55ºS. Since 1980, new information on marine algae along this coastline allows a review of the previous phytogeographic characterization. The presence/absence of algal species, separated by division and geographic affinity, was...

Resilience, Regime Shifts, and Guided Transition under Climate Change: Examining the Practical Difficulties of Managing Continually Changing Systems Ecology and Society
Lin, Brenda B; CSIRO, Climate Adaptation Flagship; brenda.lin@csiro.au; Petersen, Brian; Michigan State University W.K. Kellogg Biological Station; petersenbri@gmail.com.
Managing terrestrial systems has become increasingly difficult under climate change as unidirectional shifts in climate conditions challenge the resilience of ecosystems to maintain their compositional structure and function. Despite the increased attention of resilience management to guide transformational change, questions remain as to how to apply resilience to manage transitions. Rather than pushing systems across thresholds into alternative states, climate change may create a stepwise progression of unknown transitional states that track changing climate conditions. Because of this uncertainty, we must find ways to guide transitioning systems across climate boundaries towards states that are socially and environmentally desirable. We propose to ease...
